Rhetoric: Second Paper

Rhetoric and Persuasive Writing
Second Paper Assignment
DRAFT DUE WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4
FINAL REVISION DUE WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11

Our second assignment will be a review of a book, movie, or CD. Your review should follow this format and address these points:

--A punchy opening line that either sums up your finding/opinion (such as, “Although Lily Allen has sometimes been dismissed as a pop diva, her newest album makes clear that this singer is here to stay”), or provides an interesting fact that the reader is not aware of (such as, “Despite media portrayals, Woodstock was not the first large-scale outdoor concert” in a review of a “Best of” compilation of Jimi Hendrix’s work).

--Background on the artist’s previous work, if a music review; or a partial synopsis of the movie and book (without spoilers!).

--Your opinion as to how well the work of art succeeds, with reasons why.

--An appeal to logos, ethos, pathos, or more than one (this can happen anywhere in the review, or throughout).

--If you wish, you may compare the artist/CD/book/movie to another that is either similar or contrasting to make your points clearer.

--A summation at the end which reviews the main point(s) and provides an additional idea or question to think about.

Rhetoric: Your third and final draft of a response to Barack Obama's inaugural speech is DUE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24. Please, please make sure to right a completely new opening paragraph and use your old first paragraph as the basis for a conclusion. Bear in mind what we have been studying: vivid language, active voice, sentences not overly long.

British Lit: On Monday we will start reading Beowulf. Sometime this week I will give out a worksheet to help you absorb some basic information from The Year 1000. Also, the final draft of your paper is DUE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27.
